Span, height and clearance

Size by floor area: 29 to 36 inches of span up to 75 square feet, 36 to 44 up to 144, 44 to 54 up to 225, and 54 or more beyond that. Hang blades 8 to 9 feet above the floor and no lower than 7, which means flush-style mounting on an 8-foot ceiling, a short downrod at 9, and about 6 more inches of rod per foot above. Keep 18 inches between blade tip and the nearest wall.

Bedrooms, living rooms and the wider ceiling

The bedroom is where a fan light earns its keep, hanging in the sightline from the bed, gentle cooling for sleep and warm light for everything else; a master bedroom generally suits a 44-inch span or larger.
