The first step is to calculate the total wattage allowed on the circuit: A 15-amp circuit at 120 volts can handle up to 1,800 watts. It is recommended to use only 80% of the circuit's capacity to avoid overloading. Therefore, you should limit the load to 1,440 watts. The next step is to find out the wattage rating of each lighting fixture you plan to connect and divide the total allowable wattage by the wattage of one fixture.
