Frequently asked questions about Outdoor Exterior Lighting
What size should an exterior wall light be?
What color temperature works outdoors?
How high should exterior wall lights be mounted?
What finishes and materials hold up outside?
Do I need wet-rated lights, and what about walls with no wiring?
The front of a house is read twice. By day it is architecture; by night it is whatever the lighting makes of it. This collection holds our outdoor exterior wall lights, from long horizontal LED runs to compact sconces, built to frame the facade rather than floodlight it.
Wall lights for the facade
Haylen is the long strip light, 12 to 94 inches, so a single run can underline a whole wall, with three color temperatures and remote dimming. Harper covers a similar spread of lengths at a fixed warm white 3000K. The sconces take the classic positions, several in matching solar and non-solar versions, and Luna (Outdoor) is a waterproof moon of a lamp for a wall that suits one soft object.
Sizing, height and light quality
Size a sconce to the door, a quarter to a third of its height, mounted 66 to 72 inches from the ground to its center. Warm white at 3000K is the default, and several designs run five temperatures from 2700K to 5000K. Warm settings keep brick, stucco and planting looking like themselves after dark.
Beyond the wall
A facade rarely finishes at the wall light. The same warm standard continues at ground level through MOD LIGHTING's modern pathway lights, at the boundary through post lights, and into the garden with outdoor solar lights for the positions no cable reaches.
Start at the front door with a matched, level pair, then carry the same finish down the path and out into the garden.
